In the cool hills of Irpinia, between Avellino and Benevento, close to the town of Taurasi, Passo delle Tortore was conceived in 2012 by 5 friends whose goal was to strengthen the ties with their land and produce world class wines in an often overlooked region. They named the winery after the pass of the turtle dove, tortora in Italian, the birds that mate for life, emblems of devoted love, whose migratory path is in the hills where the five hectares of vineyards are planted.
Francesco de Pierro, the enologist and one of the four partners, aims to produce wines of extreme precision and clarity, where tension, minerality and sapidity, all factors intrinsic with this terroir, are the common denominators, giving wines complexity and longevity. In order to tame the innate acidity of the grapes grown in this climate, Francesco chooses to let the white wines partially ferment in new barriques which allow for much needed oxygenation without imparting an overtly oaky character.
The total production is 30,000 bottles.
