The Roeno winery was started 60 years ago by Rolando Fugatti and is now run by his three children, who also operate the restaurant and agriturismo. Located in the narrow Valdadige, just below the border with Trentino, this valley is known as Terradeiforti, the land of the forts, because of the many Austrian fortifications still scattered in the landscape.
Thanks to the altitude and the temperature variation, the vineyards here produce grapes of outstanding quality. Roeno focuses on the local varietals, with an emphasis on the re-discovery of an almost extinct grape: Enantio also known as Lambrusco a foglia frastagliata (no relation to the Lambrusco of Emilia), mentioned by Pliny the Elder in the first century AD. It is a sturdy vine, able to withstand extreme mountain weather and most parasites, needing therefore little or no insecticides. Some of the vines are over 100 years old and have survived phylloxera, thanks to the sandy soils that flank the Adige river. It produces wines of intense tannns and color, that after the necessary wood aging develop spicy notes of incense and tobacco. Most of Roeno other wines are aged only in stainless steel in order to preserve the purity and typical character of each varietal.
The total production is 80.000 bottles.
